A Chicago Night in One Evening: From Sunset to the Last Deck

One evening is enough to see Chicago at night properly, if you get the order right. The chicago night time tours here all start from a few blocks around the Michigan Avenue Bridge, so the plan is about time, not distance. Start on the water at sunset, walk the river after dark, and finish high up. Here is how to fit it together in any month.

What time does the evening start?

It starts about an hour before sunset, and sunset moves by four hours through the year. On 15 June the sun sets at 8:27pm; on 15 September at 7:00pm; on 15 December at 4:20pm. Full dark follows about half an hour later.

So a summer evening starts late and runs late, and a December one is dark before most people leave work. Here is one evening in three different months, using the 15th of each.

Every month is on the dark times by month.

Read the table from the top. Find your month, and plan to be on the water about half an hour before sunset. Then everything else follows from full dark: the walk, the projections and the deck. In June that pushes the whole evening past 9pm; in December you can be finished by 8pm.

Where should you be at sunset?

On the lake, if you can. Wendella's sunset cruise is timed to take you through the lock and out onto Lake Michigan as the sun goes down. You watch the skyline lights come on from the water, with light narration and no guide.

Its departure moves with the sunset, so check the time for your date when you book. Arrive at 400 N Michigan Ave 30 minutes before, because seats are first come, first served.

Which cruise goes first?

If you only take one, take it at sunset or just after. If you want a guide in the dark instead, book First Lady's By Night cruise for later in the evening and spend the sunset on the Riverwalk.

A second cruise on the same evening is a lot of time on the water. A better second act is the storytelling cruise on another night, or the crime bus on a weekday. Our comparison of the night tours weighs them up.

Can you fit in the projections on the Mart?

Yes, from Thursday to Sunday. Art on theMART projects moving art across the river front of the Merchandise Mart for half an hour a night. From 10 September to 27 December 2026 it runs from 7:30pm to 8pm, which slots in neatly after a sunset cruise.

The fountain: before or after the river?

Buckingham Fountain runs a light, music and water show from dusk to 11pm, from spring through the end of fall. It stands in Grant Park at Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway, south of the river.

No river cruise passes it, so it is a separate trip on foot or by cab. Go after your cruise and the projections, when the show has been running a while. Our read on the fountain covers what you see.

An observation deck to finish?

It is the best way to end the night, looking down on the lights you sailed past. 360 Chicago, on the 94th floor of 875 N Michigan Ave, opens daily until 11pm, with last entry at 10pm.

Skydeck Chicago, in Willis Tower, publishes summer hours to 10pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Out of summer its hours change, so check them for your date.

What about the crime bus instead of the river?

It works on a weekday evening. The Night Crimes bus leaves 163 E. Pearson St at 7:30pm and returns there two to two and a half hours later. Check in 15 minutes early, because it leaves on time and latecomers cannot join.

The kerb is at Michigan Avenue, near the deck at 875 N Michigan. That makes the bus and a late visit to 360 Chicago an easy pair. Eat first, as there is no food on the bus.

What about a Wednesday or Saturday in summer?

In summer 2026, Navy Pier ran free fireworks on Wednesdays at 9pm and Saturdays at 10pm, from 23 May to 5 September. Watch them from the pier, or from the lake on an evening cruise that is out at the right time.

Those shows are over for this year, and the dates for 2027 have not been announced. Navy Pier also lists a show at 11:59pm on New Year's Eve.

A winter evening, when the boats stop

First Lady's 2026 season ends on 22 November, and Wendella prints no season dates. In December the sun sets by 4:20pm, so the whole evening is dark from the start.

Walk the river, which stays open to 11pm, and catch the projections at 7:30pm until 27 December. Then go up a deck. Evening lows average 25°F in December, so dress for standing still in the cold. The Night Crimes bus runs on select weekdays, so look at the dates it offers.

How long does each part take?

Build the evening from these blocks, and leave slack between them for the walk.

• A 90-minute cruise: arrive 30 minutes before, so allow two hours from the dock and back to it.
• The 45-minute tour: about an hour and a quarter with the wait to board.
• The projections: half an hour, from Thursday to Sunday.
• The crime bus: check in 15 minutes early, then two to two and a half hours.
• A deck: last entry at 10pm on Michigan Avenue, so get there by 9:30pm to enjoy it.

Two blocks and a walk make a full evening. Three is a long night, and a fourth usually means rushing one of them.

Where should you eat?

Eat before you board, or after a short cruise. The boats sell drinks and snacks, not meals. On First Lady's By Night cruise you may bring your own snacks, and the crime bus allows no food or drink at all.

In summer, an early dinner and a late cruise works well, because sunset is after 8pm. In autumn it is the other way round: cruise at dusk, then eat. Both docks are in the middle of the city, so you will not be short of places to choose from.

What if it rains?

The cruises sail rain or shine. Each boat has an enclosed lounge below the open deck, so you can watch from inside. Severe weather cancels a sailing, and you are then offered a new date or a full refund.

On a wet night, swap the walk for a deck. The deck at 875 N Michigan is indoors and open to 11pm, and the bus keeps you dry between its stops.

How do you get back?

Every cruise ends at the dock it left from, on the Riverwalk at Michigan Avenue. The crime bus ends back on Pearson St. Both are in the middle of the city, so most hotels are a short ride away.

If you end at the fountain in Grant Park, you are south of the river, and a cab is the simplest way back north. The Riverwalk itself closes at 11pm.
