What to Do and See on a Chicago Night Out

A cruise fills 90 minutes. The rest of your evening in Chicago can be free: a river walk that stays open until 11pm, a film projected across a building, a lit fountain, and two decks high above the city. Choosing among chicago night time tours? Start with what the city does on its own after dark.

Most of what follows sits near the river and the lakefront, within reach of the cruise docks. The hours and seasons below come from each place's own pages. Where a date has passed for 2026, we say so, rather than guess at 2027.

Walk the Chicago Riverwalk until 11pm

The Chicago Riverwalk is the city's path along the south bank of the main branch of the river. It is free and open from 6am to 11pm. It runs 1.25 miles, in four districts: the Confluence, the Arcade, the Civic and the Esplanade.

Both cruise docks at Michigan Avenue are on it, so you can walk it before or after your sailing. At night the bridges are lit above you, and the towers stand straight up from the water's edge. You do not need a ticket or a guide for any of it.

Watch Art on theMART, Thursday to Sunday

Art on theMART projects moving art across the river front of the Merchandise Mart. It plays for half an hour a night, from Thursday to Sunday, and the start time moves with the season. You watch it from the Riverwalk across the water, and it costs nothing.

The 2027 dates have not been announced. If you are here on a Thursday to Sunday before 27 December 2026, the 7:30pm show fits before a late cruise or after an early one.

Navy Pier after dark, and its summer fireworks

Navy Pier is free to enter and open all year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. From 8 September to 31 December 2026 it opens from 11am to 8pm, Sunday to Thursday, and to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The Centennial Wheel turns daily. After 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, anyone under 18 needs an adult with them.

The summer fireworks are over for 2026. They ran from 23 May to 5 September, on Wednesdays at 9pm and Saturdays at 10pm, and they were free. Navy Pier also lists a show at 11:59pm on New Year's Eve. The summer 2027 dates have not been published yet.

Go up: 360 Chicago or Skydeck Chicago

Two observation decks let you see the lit grid from above, and both stay open into the evening. 360 Chicago is on the 94th floor of 875 N Michigan Ave. Skydeck Chicago is in Willis Tower, in the Loop.

360 Chicago keeps the later hours, with its CloudBar open to 11pm. Skydeck Chicago publishes summer hours of 9am to 10pm, from 8:30am on Saturdays. Its hours change in the other seasons, so check them for your date.

Buckingham Fountain's evening show

Buckingham Fountain stands in Grant Park, at Columbus Dr and Congress Pkwy. In season it runs a light, music and water show from dusk to 11pm. The season runs from spring through the end of fall, and the show is free.

The fountain was dedicated in 1927. Its four pairs of sea horses stand for the four states around Lake Michigan. No river cruise passes it, so go on foot or by cab, before or after your cruise.

What is free after dark

Much of a Chicago evening costs nothing. This is what you pay for and what you do not.

Before and after a cruise near the docks

You have half an hour to fill before boarding, and you will want somewhere to go after. Here is what is within a short walk of the Michigan Avenue docks.

• The bridge itself: the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower stand at the north end of the Michigan Avenue Bridge. The Wrigley Building is floodlit at night.
• West along the river: the Riverwalk leads west, under the bridges, towards the projection on the Mart from Thursday to Sunday.
• North up the avenue: the Magnificent Mile, with 360 Chicago near its north end, and the crime bus kerb at Pearson St.
• East to the lake: Navy Pier, on the lakefront east of the avenue.
• South into Grant Park: the fountain, lit until 11pm in season.
