Chicago Night Tour Options

You can see Chicago after dark from the water, from the street or from the air. Each way gives you a different city, and each one depends on when the sun goes down. Weighing up chicago night time tours? Here is every option side by side, with the one question that matters most: will it be dark when you set out?

Most of what is on offer is a boat. The cruises leave from two docks at Michigan Avenue, a block apart on opposite banks of the river. A bus leaves at 7:30pm from the Magnificent Mile, a helicopter flies from a heliport south-west of the Loop, and a science museum in Hyde Park sells a daytime ticket. The sections below take them one at a time.

Water, streets or air: the three ways to see Chicago at night

On the water: A 45- or 90-minute cruise from the Riverwalk. You sit on an open top deck or in a heated lounge below, with a bar and a restroom on board. Fares run from $28 to $50 a person. This is the only way to see the whole skyline lit from Lake Michigan.

On the streets: The Night Crimes bus, $55 per person. It runs 2 to 2.5 hours from 7:30pm, with five stops off the bus at the city's gangster sites. You hear stories, not architecture.

In the air: A helicopter seat from $129.99 per person for the 10-mile flight, about seven minutes from take-off to landing. It is the shortest option and the dearest by far.

Every option side by side

Here is the whole range in one table. "Light" tells you whether a sailing is built for the dark or simply runs into the evening. Fares are the captured from-prices, per person.

The First Lady night cruise and its Creepy Cruise are also sold under a second title. The table shows each once. The price, the boat and the dock do not change with the title.

River-only or out on Lake Michigan

This is the biggest difference between the cruises, and the listings do not always make it plain. From the river, you look up at the towers from below. From the lake, you see the whole skyline at once, lit end to end.

To reach the lake, a boat passes through the Chicago Harbor Lock at the river's mouth. On a busy evening it can wait its turn there. Travellers on the lake cruises report waits at the lock, and one sunset sailing in August 2026 never got through. If the lake is the point, book the night cruise or the sunset cruise, and allow for the wait.

Live guide, light narration or a storyteller

Who talks on board changes the evening as much as the route does. Check this before you book, because the titles do not tell you.

• A live guide: First Lady's night cruise and Wendella's 45-minute tour. You hear the buildings, the architects and the bridges as you pass them.
• Light narration, no guide: Wendella's sunset cruise. Wendella says itself that it is not a guided boat tour. The crew points things out, and the time on the lake is for the view.
• A live storyteller: the Creepy Cruise. The talk is the city's dark history, from the Eastland disaster to the Great Chicago Fire.
• A live guide on the bus: the Night Crimes Tour, with historic footage on board and a crime quiz.
• Your pilot: on the helicopter, after a safety briefing on the ground.

Which departures leave after dark

Sunset in Chicago moves by more than four hours across the year. It falls at 4:19pm in early December and at 8:30pm in late June. So a fixed start time can be broad daylight in one month and full night in another. The Night Crimes bus always leaves at 7:30pm, and this is what that start looks like through the year.

The cruises built for the dark shift their times with the season, but check the time you book against the table. In June, pick the latest sailing on offer. The helicopter: ten miles in about seven minutes

The flight is the one option that shows you the grid of the city from above. It is also the shortest by a long way. Know what you are buying before you pay for it.

The flight: About seven minutes for the 10-mile route, counting take-off and landing. The 16- and 30-mile flights cost more.

The start: Vertiport Chicago at 1339 S. Wood St, two miles south-west of the Loop. Check in 10 to 15 minutes before your booked time.

The light: Fly Heli sells sunset and evening slots, and they fill fast. The listing itself prints no flight times, so choose your slot with the sunset table in mind.

On the day: Fly Heli asks for photo ID that matches the booking, and sets a weight limit of 295 lbs a passenger. Groups of more than three may be split.

The one daytime ticket, and where it fits

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry ticket is the cheapest thing here, at $25.95 per person. It is not an evening plan. The museum opens from 9:30am to 4pm, in Hyde Park, on the South Side. Use it for the day before a cruise, and book the U-505 submarine or the Coal Mine as extras if you want them.

In 2026 the museum closes at 3pm on 3 and 17 October. It stays open to 5:30pm on 7 to 16, 18 and 22 to 25 November. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Choosing by who is coming

• A date: the sunset cruise, for the lake as the lights come on. For a live guide as well, pick the night cruise.
• Children under ten: a cruise. Under-4s ride free on First Lady boats and on Wendella's 45-minute tour, and there is a restroom on board. The crime bus is recommended for ages 10 and up.
• Teenagers: the Night Crimes bus or the Creepy Cruise, both story-led.
• A wheelchair user: a cruise, after a call to the operator. Wendella has ramps at river level, and First Lady has a step-free route by the State St ramp. The bus has steps and no lift.
• Short on time: the 45-minute river tour, if you book its latest departure.
• The whole skyline at once: a lake cruise or the helicopter.
