Best Chicago Night Attractions, and Which Are Open Late

Much of Chicago at night is free and open late, and you do not need a tour to see it. What you need is the hours, because they run from 4pm to 11pm depending on the place. This guide goes through the big names one by one. It says which are open, which cost money, and which you can only see from the water, where the Chicago Night tickets come in.

Which Chicago attractions are open at night?

The river walk, the fountain in season, the projections on the Mart, Navy Pier and both observation decks all stay open after dark. The museums do not. Here are the late hours side by side.

Hours are for autumn 2026 unless marked. The decks and the pier change them through the year.

Is the river walk open at night?

Yes. The Chicago Riverwalk is free and open from 6am to 11pm. It runs 1.25 miles along the main branch of the river, in four districts: the Confluence, the Arcade, the Civic and the Esplanade.

Both cruise docks are on it, at Michigan Avenue. After dark it is the best free way to see the lit towers and the bridges, and it is where you watch the projections from. The meeting-points map shows the stairs and the ramp down.

It runs from Lake Street to the lakefront. Start at the docks and walk west under the bridges, and you reach the bank opposite the Mart in time for the projections on a Thursday to Sunday.

Is the fountain in Grant Park on at night?

Yes, in season. Buckingham Fountain runs a light, music and water show from dusk to 11pm, from spring through the end of fall. It stands at Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway, and it is free.

It was dedicated in 1927, and its four pairs of sea horses stand for the four states around Lake Michigan. No river cruise passes it, so plan it as its own stop. Our read on the fountain goes into the show.

When do the projections on the Mart play?

From Thursday to Sunday, for half an hour a night. Art on theMART projects moving art across the river front of the Merchandise Mart, a 2.5-acre wall that opened in 1930 as the world's largest building. The start time moves with the season.

You watch from the Riverwalk across the water, and it costs nothing. The dates for 2027 have not been announced yet.

Is Navy Pier worth it after dark?

It is free to walk, and the view back to the skyline is good. From 8 September to 31 December 2026 it opens from 11am to 8pm, Sunday to Thursday, and to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. It closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Centennial Wheel turns daily. After 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, anyone under 18 needs an adult with them. The summer fireworks ran from 23 May to 5 September 2026 and are over for this year.

You can also see the pier from the water. The By Night cruise passes it and the harbor lighthouse once it is out on the lake.

Is the deck at 875 N Michigan open at night?

Yes, and it keeps the latest hours of the two decks. 360 Chicago, on the 94th floor, opens daily from 9am to 11pm, with last entry at 10pm. Its CloudBar stays open to 11pm too.

It sits near the north end of the Magnificent Mile, a short walk from the crime bus kerb on Pearson St. That makes it an easy last stop after the bus.

Is the Willis Tower deck open at night?

In summer, yes. Skydeck Chicago publishes summer hours of 9am to 10pm, from 8:30am on Saturdays, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is in the Loop, south-west of the cruise docks.

Out of summer its hours change, so check them for your date before you plan a late visit. For an evening after September, the deck on Michigan Avenue is the safer bet.

Is the Museum of Science and Industry open at night?

No. The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry opens daily from 9:30am to 4pm, and it closes at 3pm on 3 and 17 October 2026. It is in Hyde Park, well south of the river.

So use a timed museum entry for the day before your evening, not the evening itself. The U-505 submarine and the Coal Mine tour cost extra, and you enter an hour before them. With only one day in the city, you may prefer to rest in the afternoon and save your energy for the evening.

What can you only see from the water?

The whole skyline in one line. From Lake Michigan the towers stand side by side, which no street, deck or bridge shows you. You reach the lake through the Chicago Harbor Lock, and only the By Night and sunset cruises go that far.

From the river you see the canyon of towers from below, and the bridges one after another. The 45-minute tour passes the Wrigley Building, the Merchandise Mart and Marina City. Our night boat tours set out which cruise goes where.

What is free after dark?

Most of it. The river walk, the fountain, the projections and Navy Pier cost nothing to enter. You pay for the decks, the cruises, the bus and the flight.

A free evening in autumn could run like this. Walk the river at dusk, watch the projections at 7:30pm, then head south to the fountain before 11pm. Our one-evening plan turns that into a timed evening with a cruise.

Where do the night tours start?

Most of them start on the river, a short walk from the free sights. First Lady's cruises board down the stairs at the northeast corner of Michigan and Wacker; the step-free way is the ramp at State St and Wacker, then east along the river. Wendella boards at 400 N Michigan Ave, by the Wrigley Building, on the other bank.

The crime bus leaves from outside 163 E. Pearson St, at Michigan Avenue. The helicopter leaves from Vertiport Chicago, at 1339 S. Wood St, about two miles south-west of the Loop. Give yourself time for the trip there, because the booked time is your check-in time.

Which deck should you choose?

Choose by the calendar. From October to May, the deck on Michigan Avenue is the one with published late hours, to 11pm every day. In summer both stay open into the evening, and you can pick by where you are.

If you are near the cruise docks or the crime bus kerb, go north to 875 N Michigan. If you are in the Loop, the Willis Tower deck is closer.

Can you see it all without a tour?

You can see most of it. What a tour adds is the lake, a guide, and the crime scenes that are hard to find alone. If you only have one evening, walk the river for free and spend your money on the lake.
