Bring a jacket, even in August
The most repeated advice is about the cold. Once the boat is out on the lake, the wind picks up, and travellers who sailed in May, August and September all wished they had one more layer.
The light depends on the sailing
An early sunset sailing in summer can finish before the city lights come on, while a 9pm boat gets the skyline lit. Pick the time by the month: sunset moves more than four hours through the year.
Arrive early for the top deck
Seats are first come, first served, and the open top deck fills first. Travellers who arrived late stood on the lower level, where the guide can be harder to hear.
The lock can mean a wait
On a busy evening, and on holiday weekends, boats queue to pass between the river and the lake. Some travellers lost part of their lake time to it, and one 90-minute cruise ran past two hours.
