When Chicago Night Falls: What Time It Gets Dark, Month by Month

Sunset and full dark, month by month

The table gives the U.S. Naval Observatory's times for the Michigan Avenue Bridge in 2026, on the local clock. "Full dark" is the end of civil twilight: the sun is six degrees below the horizon and the last blue has gone from the sky. That is the moment the lit towers stand out against black. Other years fall within a minute or two, so read the times as "about".

The last column is the one that decides most evenings out. Every month from October to February, a 7:30pm start is already dark. In mid-September and mid-March it is dusk. From April to August you leave in daylight, and in late June the sun is still up for another hour.

How long dusk lasts

The gap between sunset and full dark is the part of the evening photographers wait for: the sky goes deep blue, and the towers are lit against it rather than against black. It is not the same length all year. In mid-June it lasts about 35 minutes, in mid-September about 28, and in early December about 32. So a summer sailing gets the longest blue hour, and an autumn one goes from sunset to dark fastest. If you want that blue sky behind the skyline, be on the water from sunset, not from full dark.

What a 7:30pm start looks like in June and in December

The one evening here that runs to a fixed clock is the Night Crimes bus from Pearson Street. It leaves at 7:30pm on select weekdays, all season, for two to two and a half hours. In mid-June the sun sets at 8:27pm and full dark comes at 9:02pm. So the first hour of your evening is daylight, and only the second half is dark.

In early December the sun sets at 4:19pm and it is dark by 4:51pm. By 7:30pm it has been dark for well over two hours, and every stop is after dark. It is also much colder: the average December low at Midway is about 25°F. A warm bus between stops matters more then than the light does.

The two nights the clock moves

Daylight saving time runs from 8 March to 1 November in 2026, and those two dates move the dark by an hour overnight. On 7 March full dark came at 6:16pm; on 8 March, at 7:17pm. On 1 November it works the other way. Sunset jumps from 5:46pm on 31 October to 4:45pm the next day, and every evening from then until March starts after dark.

Cruises that move with the sun

The boats do not all keep one clock. The sunset cruise from 400 N Michigan is timed to the sunset, so its departure moves through the season and shows when you pick a date. It ends close to full dark, so the lights come on in the last part of the cruise.

The night cruise from Michigan and Wacker sails later. Its departures also show by date, and the rule is simple: a sailing that leaves after the "full dark" time in the table is night from the dock. Which season suits which evening

• June and July: light until after 9pm. Take a sunset sailing, or a late one if you want the dark.
• August: the sweet spot for a cruise near 8pm. You leave at dusk and come back in the dark. By mid-September an 8pm sailing is already dark.
• October and November: dark from the dock on any evening sailing, and cooler on the lake.
• December to February: dark by 5pm. First Lady's 2026 season ends on 22 November, so check which evenings still run before you plan one.
• March to May: the evenings lengthen fast. A 7:30pm start moves from dusk in March to daylight by April.

What stays open after dark

A tour is only part of the evening. The Chicago Riverwalk is free and open from 6am to 11pm. 360 Chicago, on the 94th floor, is open daily until 11pm, with last entry at 10pm. Buckingham Fountain runs its light, music and water show from dusk to 11pm, spring through fall. Before you book

Check three things against your date. The dark, in the table above. The temperature, on the weather page. And the kerb or dock, on the meeting-point map, so you know how long it takes you to get there. Then read what to wear on the water, because the lake is colder than the street.

If you only have one evening, let the month choose for you. In summer, you get the most from a sunset sailing and a late walk on the river front. In autumn, you can book any evening cruise and be sure of the dark. And if you want your stories on land, you can take the 7:30pm bus in any month and see the second half of your evening lit.
